The Orphan and The Polar Bear (Kivalliq Inuktitut)
Unit for Grades 3, 4, 5 based on volume by Sakiasi Qaunaq
This unit is geared toward Grades 3, 4, and 5 primary students. It consists of a series of five lessons focused on The Orphan and the Polar Bear by Sakiasi Qaunaq. This book study will explore Inuit culture through legends and discuss important themes like bullying and perseverance. As they participate in reading, writing, oral communication, comprehension, and reflection activities, students will become more knowledgeable about the following topics of study: what makes a story a legend, what are the different parts of a story, and what it would be like to be an author. To end the unit, instructors may decide to invite an elder in to tell stories or legends from the region you are in. Throughout the unit, suggestions are provided for independent and group work that can be used for assessment purposes.
